6 Surprising Reasons Mosquitoes Prefer Certain People Over Others

Mosquitoes are not just irritating insects; they are also vectors for serious diseases like malaria, dengue, and Zika virus, which pose significant health risks globally. Understanding why some people attract more mosquitoes than others can help in better managing and preventing mosquito bites. Dr. Mayur Manji Mewada, an expert from KJ Somaiya Medical College & Research Centre, sheds light on several factors that make certain individuals more appealing to mosquitoes.

  1. Clothing Choices: Darker clothes and exposed skin areas are more attractive to mosquitoes. Wearing light-colored and fully-covered attire can reduce the chances of getting bitten.
  2. Blood Group: Research suggests that individuals with blood group ‘O’ are more likely to be bitten by mosquitoes due to specific chemicals released through their skin.
  3. Body Heat: People who emit more body heat, such as those who are physically active or have a higher metabolic rate, tend to attract more mosquitoes. This includes obese individuals and athletes.
  4. Carbon Dioxide Output: Mosquitoes are drawn to carbon dioxide. Individuals who breathe out more CO2, possibly due to faster breathing or higher metabolism, are more prone to mosquito bites.
  5. Skin Sweat and Bacteria: The interaction between skin sweat and the microbial flora on one’s skin produces odors that can attract mosquitoes. People who emit certain smells are more likely to attract these pests.
  6. Physiological Changes: Changes in physiology, such as those during pregnancy, can increase a person’s attractiveness to mosquitoes. Pregnant women often experience increased body temperature and CO2 production, making them more susceptible to bites.

Additionally, alcohol consumption can raise body temperature and alter metabolic rates, further increasing attractiveness to mosquitoes.

Understanding these factors can empower individuals to take preventive measures, such as using mosquito repellents and ensuring proper clothing and hygiene, to reduce the risk of mosquito bites and the associated diseases. Community efforts like spraying insecticides and maintaining environmental cleanliness also play a crucial role in controlling mosquito populations.
