Lucknow, August 8, 2025 – In a landmark decision, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved an ambitious scholarship program that will send five of the state’s brightest students to top UK universities every year. Alongside this, three new private universities have been greenlit, marking a significant push for higher education under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s leadership.
Global Opportunities for UP’s Students
The newly approved “Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee-Chevening Uttar Pradesh Scholarship Scheme” will partner with the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) to fund master’s degrees at world-renowned institutions like Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, and the London School of Economics (LSE).
State Higher Education Minister Yogendra Upadhyaya confirmed that the three-year initiative will cover tuition, living expenses, and round-trip airfare, with costs shared equally between UP and the UK. Each selected student will receive approximately £19,800 (Rs 23 lakh), with Rs 2 crore already allocated for the 2025-26 academic year.
Three New Universities Coming to UP
The Cabinet also granted approval for:
- Vedanta University (Muzaffarnagar) – Spread over 23 acres in Hussainpur Bopada village.
- KD University (Mathura) – Expected to boost education in the Braj region.
- Bodhisattva University (Barabanki) – Set to enhance higher education access in central UP.
These institutions will operate under the UP Private Universities Act, 2019, with an ordinance amendment formalizing their establishment.
Other Key Decisions
- Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign: Over 60 lakh national flags (worth Rs 12 crore) will be distributed, produced by women’s self-help groups.
- KGMU Council Diversity: SC/ST and OBC members will now be included in King George’s Medical University’s working council.
- Longer Ad Licenses: Advertising permit validity extended from 2 to 15 years to boost urban revenue.
- Hand-Pump Revival: Funds approved to restore 1,750 defunct hand-pumps across the state.
With these sweeping reforms, the UP government aims to strengthen education, infrastructure, and civic participation, setting a progressive agenda for the state’s future.
