NEW DELHI – In a significant update to its educational material, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has unveiled a comprehensive new module dedicated to one of India’s most audacious military operations: ‘Operation Sindoor.’ This content, designed for senior classes, moves beyond dry historical dates to deliver a gripping case study in strategy, innovation, and national security.
The module zeroes in on the execution of the operation, which was a critical component of the 1971 war that led to the liberation of Bangladesh. Launched on December 8, 1971, Operation Sindoor was not merely an attack; it was a multi-layered mission designed to deliver a devastating psychological blow to the Pakistani military leadership while showcasing India’s growing tactical prowess.
At its heart was a daring aerial bombing mission targeting the Governor’s House in Dhaka, where a crucial meeting of the Pakistani administration was underway. The real genius, as the NCERT module elaborates, lay in its execution. The Indian Air Force (IAF) employed a covert technological trick: a captured Pakistani radio beacon.
This beacon was strategically activated, effectively tricking Pakistani air defenses into believing the incoming IAF Canberra bombers were friendly aircraft. This clever ruse allowed the Indian planes to approach their target with minimal resistance, achieving complete surprise. The successful strike demonstrated not just courage but a sophisticated understanding of electronic warfare, a concept still relevant in modern military science.
Furthermore, the NCERT analysis positions the operation as a potent “political message.” The precision strike on the very symbol of Pakistani authority in East Pakistan was a clear signal that the Indian military could reach the heart of their command structure at will. This act significantly demoralized the opposing leadership and boosted the morale of Bengali nationalist forces.
By integrating Operation Sindoor into its curriculum, NCERT aims to provide students with a tangible example of Indian strategic thinking. It transcends traditional war storytelling, instead breaking down the operation into its core components—intelligence, technology, timing, and psychological impact—offering a valuable lesson in critical thinking and the application of knowledge under pressure.
This move is seen as part of a larger initiative to contemporize educational content, ensuring students appreciate the strategic and historical milestones that have shaped modern India’s defense and diplomatic landscape.
