The Supreme Court of India is now hearing a plea that calls for an entirely independent investigation into the disaster, directly challenging the credibility of the official report filed by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB).
The petition, brought before a bench headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna, argues that the AAIB’s final report is marred by “serious flaws and procedural lapses.” The central contention is that the official document fails to provide a complete and accurate account of the tragedy, leaving grieving families with more questions than answers.
According to the petitioner, a glaring omission in the AAIB report is an allegedly incomplete passenger manifest. This discrepancy raises profound concerns about the thoroughness of the initial investigation. Furthermore, the plea contends that the report stopped short of clearly identifying all individuals and operational failures that contributed to the accident, potentially shielding responsible parties from accountability.
