JOHANNESBURG – In a significant address that shifted the spotlight onto a pervasive global threat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called upon the international community to confront and dismantle the dangerous nexus between drug trafficking and the financing of terrorism. Speaking at the BRICS summit, the Prime Minister framed this issue as an urgent priority for ensuring worldwide peace and stability.
“The dark alliance between the drug trade and terrorist networks represents one of the most significant security challenges of our time,” PM Modi stated during his intervention. He emphasized that the massive, illicit profits generated from the global narcotics trade have become a primary financial lifeline for extremist and terrorist organizations, fueling conflict and undermining the rule of law.
The Prime Minister’s remarks served as a clarion call for the BRICS bloc—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—to spearhead a more robust and coordinated international response. He advocated for enhanced cooperation in intelligence sharing, joint operations to disrupt trafficking routes, and stronger financial controls to choke the flow of dirty money. This, he argued, is essential to “cut off the oxygen” that allows terrorism to survive and proliferate.
Beyond the pressing issue of the drug-terror nexus, PM Modi also touched upon the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Reiterating India’s consistent position, he asserted, “India firmly believes that this is not an era of war.” He championed the path of diplomacy and dialogue as the only sustainable way forward to resolve the crisis, a stance that has been a cornerstone of India’s foreign policy throughout the conflict.
The address positions India as a key voice in shaping the global security agenda within the BRICS framework, highlighting interconnected challenges that require collective, rather than isolated, solutions. As these nations continue to gain economic and political influence, their approach to tackling such complex issues will be closely watched by the international community.
