In a sharp rebuke, the Kremlin has condemned remarks made by US President Joe Biden, in which he referred to Russian President Vladimir Putin using derogatory language during a climate change awareness event in San Francisco. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov expressed dismay at Biden’s choice of words, labeling it as “shameful” and unbecoming of a country’s leader. “This is a huge shame for the country itself… for the US. If a president uses that kind of language, it’s shameful,” Peskov stated, suggesting that such comments were beneath the dignity of the presidential office.
Peskov further criticized Biden’s approach, comparing it unfavorably to a “Hollywood cowboy” persona, implying a lack of seriousness and decorum expected from world leaders. The Russian-state news agency TASS highlighted Peskov’s response, emphasizing that while Biden’s words were intended to demean Putin, they instead reflected poorly on the United States itself. “Biden’s words about Putin cannot hurt the Russian president, but they are a disgrace to the United States itself,” Peskov was quoted.
The controversy stems from Biden’s candid remarks to a small group of reporters, where he juxtaposed the threat posed by Putin with the existential crisis of climate change, stating: “We have a crazy [expletive] like that guy Putin but the existential threat to humanity is climate.” The Kremlin’s response underscores the ongoing tensions between the US and Russia, with both sides engaging in a war of words that further complicates their already strained relations.
