In a momentous event set to captivate the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will today disclose the names of the four astronauts chosen for India’s ambitious Gaganyaan mission, marking a significant milestone in the country’s space exploration journey. The announcement, eagerly awaited since the mission’s announcement in 2018, will take place at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, where the astronauts have been rigorously preparing for their upcoming space voyage.
The selection process for these astronauts was meticulous, with an initial pool of test pilots undergoing a series of evaluations at Bengaluru’s Institute of Aerospace Medicine, conducted by the Indian Air Force and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Following their selection, the astronauts received extensive training in Russia, adapting to the unique challenges of space travel, despite setbacks caused by the global pandemic.
Back in India, their training continued with the support of the ISRO’s Human Space Flight Centre and various military agencies, ensuring they are fully equipped for the demands of space. The Gaganyaan mission aims to send three crew members into a 400 km orbit for three days, showcasing India’s capability in human spaceflight and contributing to global space exploration efforts. This groundbreaking mission not only highlights India’s technological prowess but also its commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and inspiring future generations.
