Modi Government to Welcome 25 Private Sector Experts into Key Government Roles

In a significant move to enhance governance, the Modi government is set to appoint 25 specialists from the private sector to key positions within the central government. This initiative, part of the government’s efforts to bring in fresh talent and perspectives, was confirmed by officials today.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has sanctioned the hiring of three joint secretaries and 22 directors/deputy secretaries across various departments. Traditionally, these crucial roles have been occupied by officers from all-India services such as the IAS, IPS, and IFoS, among other Group A services.

This recruitment drive is conducted through the lateral entry mode, introduced in 2018, which aims to incorporate private sector specialists into government departments to bolster policy-making and governance. The lateral entry scheme targets positions at the joint secretary, director, and deputy secretary levels, which are pivotal in shaping government policies.

Since its inception, the lateral entry scheme has seen the induction of 38 private sector specialists, including 10 joint secretaries and 28 directors/deputy secretaries, into the government. Currently, 33 specialists are serving in significant departments, with two joint secretaries having completed their three-year tenure.

The recruitment process, overseen by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), seeks candidates with domain expertise from the private sector, state governments, autonomous bodies, and public sector undertakings. This innovative approach by the Modi government reflects its commitment to revitalizing governance with external expertise and insights.
