Indian Navy Steps Up Surveillance with Indigenous High Altitude Pseudo-Satellites

In a significant move towards bolstering its surveillance and communication capabilities, the Indian Navy has entered into a contract with NewSpace Research and Technologies (NRT) for the indigenous design and development of High Altitude Pseudo-Satellites (HAPS). This initiative marks a pivotal step towards realizing the vision of Atma Nirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) as promoted by the Government of India, aiming to strengthen national security through indigenous solutions.

The contract aligns with the Indian government’s drive towards self-reliance in defence production, underlining a strategic shift towards utilizing homegrown technologies for defense and security needs. This initiative is a testament to the commitment of India’s armed forces to fight future wars with domestically produced weapons and equipment, as echoed by the service chiefs on multiple occasions.

Designed to operate in the stratosphere at an altitude of approximately 65,000 feet, or 18-20 kilometers above the Earth’s surface, HAPS will occupy a unique position in the skies—well above the cruising altitude of commercial aircraft, which typically fly between 30,000 to 38,000 feet, and significantly below conventional satellites positioned around 200 km above the Earth. This strategic placement will enable the HAPS to offer unprecedented surveillance and communication capabilities, bridging the gap between satellite technology and High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) unmanned aerial vehicles.

The adoption of HAPS technology represents a cost-effective solution to continuous surveillance and data gathering over specific areas on the Earth’s surface, with the added capability to hover over fixed points. This development is not only a leap forward in enhancing the operational effectiveness of the Indian Navy but also a significant contribution to the ecosystem of innovation and technological advancement in defense and aerospace, fostered by initiatives like iDEX (Innovation for Defence Excellence) launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018.

As the Indian Navy embarks on this journey towards futuristic and self-reliant naval capabilities, the deployment of HAPS signifies a major milestone in enhancing India’s defense infrastructure with cutting-edge, indigenous technologies.
