Electric Vehicle (EV) manufacturers are now required to offer a three-year warranty on batteries, according to the newly unveiled Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS). Aimed at fostering the adoption of environmentally friendly vehicles, the EMPS outlines several measures to ensure the durability and serviceability of EV batteries, which constitute almost 40% of an electric vehicle’s cost. This mandate is part of the guidelines released by the heavy industries ministry on Thursday, highlighting the government’s commitment to sustainable transportation.
In addition to the warranty, EV manufacturers benefiting from the EMPS must demonstrate a significant level of local component production. The scheme specifies warranty conditions, including a three-year or 20,000-kilometer warranty for two-wheelers and an 80,000-kilometer warranty for three-wheelers. These stipulations are designed to encourage manufacturers to focus on quality and reliability, ensuring that electric vehicles are not just eco-friendly but also durable and supported by a robust service network.
The initiative underscores the government’s vision for a greener future and its push for ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ or self-reliance in the automotive sector. By insisting on comprehensive after-sales support and local manufacturing, the EMPS aims to build consumer confidence in electric vehicles, paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable mode of transportation across India.
