Celebrating Diwali Amid Social Media Hate

This Diwali, Trafalgar Square in London will again transform into a vibrant venue for the Indian community’s festivities. In a video announcement, Mayor Sadiq Khan wished Londoners a joyous Diwali, celebrating unity and diversity. Yet, the message of inclusiveness encountered an ugly side on social media, with numerous comments demanding Indians in the UK to “Go back to India.” Many trolls shared sentiments against cultural festivities in London, questioning the event’s relevance in the UK.

Popular Indian-origin creators, Akshay and Deepali, posted a clip capturing past Diwali celebrations in Trafalgar Square, inviting people to join on October 27. The video features lively moments of music, dance, and traditions unique to the Indian community. “From my family to yours, Happy Diwali,” concluded Khan, extending a warm invitation to everyone.
