Govt Approves ₹8,800 Crore Skill India Programme: What’s New?

Posted by

Key Highlights:

  • The Union Cabinet has approved ₹8,800 crore for the Skill India Programme until 2026.
  • The initiative aims to provide demand-driven, industry-aligned training across India.
  • Key schemes like PMKVY 4.0, PM-NAPS, and JSS have been merged for better efficiency.

How Will This Programme Benefit India’s Workforce?

The Skill India Programme has been extended and restructured to help India build a future-ready workforce. With a budget of ₹8,800 crore, the initiative will run from 2022-23 to 2025-26 and will focus on technology-driven training to meet the demands of modern industries.

The government has combined three major schemes under Skill India:

  1. Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 4.0 (PMKVY 4.0) – Offers short-term training, reskilling, and upskilling in emerging fields.
  2. Pradhan Mantri National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (PM-NAPS) – Provides hands-on, on-the-job training.
  3. Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) Scheme – Focuses on community-based skill development, particularly in rural areas.

What’s New in Skill India?

A major upgrade to PMKVY 4.0 includes the introduction of On-the-Job Training (OJT) in short-term skill courses. This means that participants will not only learn but also gain real industry experience, making them more employable.

Additionally, the program will now offer over 400 new courses in Artificial Intelligence, 5G Technology, Cybersecurity, Green Hydrogen, and Drone Technology—preparing young Indians for careers in emerging industries.

To ensure smooth implementation, Skill India will collaborate with various government initiatives like:

  • PM Vishwakarma (MSME Ministry)
  • PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana
  • National Green Hydrogen Mission

This integration will optimize resources, reduce duplication, and ensure maximum impact across various sectors.

What’s Next?

With a rapidly changing job market, skill development is the key to ensuring employment and economic growth. The Skill India Programme is expected to benefit millions of people, especially those from rural and marginalized communities, by providing them with the tools to compete in a modern workforce.

As India moves towards becoming a global technology and manufacturing hub, initiatives like these will play a crucial role in empowering the youth and boosting the country’s economic development.
