In the wake of social activist Anna Hazare’s critical remarks on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s recent arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) expressed their disappointment and sadness. AAP leader Dilip Pandey, reflecting on Hazare’s comments, voiced the party’s disheartenment, especially given Hazare’s silence on similar issues involving leaders from other political backgrounds.
Pandey highlighted instances where figures previously accused of corruption by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were later embraced by the party, such as Himanta Biswa Sarma, now Chief Minister after joining BJP, and Ajit Pawar, who became Maharashtra’s Deputy CM after aligning with the BJP. “It’s very unfortunate,” Pandey stated, noting the respect AAP holds for Hazare. He added, “It’s sad and we are also pained sometimes when… no one raises their voice.”
Anna Hazare, earlier, had criticized Kejriwal, implying that the AAP chief’s arrest was a consequence of his own actions, particularly concerning the controversial excise policy. “Even a small child knows that liquor is bad… He thought that he will earn more money and that is why he made this policy,” Hazare remarked, expressing his disillusionment with Kejriwal’s decisions since their time protesting together against corruption.
Hazare’s pointed comments reflect his disappointment in Kejriwal’s governance choices, contrasting with their shared past of advocating against corruption and societal ills like alcohol abuse. As the legal proceedings against Kejriwal unfold, AAP stands firm in their defense, underlining the contrasting reactions to political figures across the spectrum.
