On Tuesday, Arvind Kejriwal officially submitted his resignation as Delhi’s Chief Minister to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena at the Raj Niwas, marking a significant shift in Delhi’s political landscape.
Atishi’s Nomination as Delhi’s New CM
Shortly after Kejriwal’s resignation, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Gopal Rai announced that the party had unanimously decided to nominate Atishi as the new Chief Minister. Atishi, a prominent figure in the AAP, was chosen as the leader of the legislative party earlier in the day. She subsequently staked her claim to form the government.
Atishi’s Statement on Taking Over
Atishi, who is set to become Delhi’s third woman Chief Minister after Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit, expressed her gratitude towards Arvind Kejriwal, referring to him as her “guru.” She acknowledged the unique opportunity provided by AAP, stating, “It’s possible only in the Aam Aadmi Party and under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal that a first-time politician has become a chief minister.”
Kejriwal’s Reason for Resignation
Kejriwal’s resignation came with an emotional message to AAP workers and the people of Delhi. He announced that he would only return to the Chief Minister’s office if the public certifies his honesty in the upcoming Delhi elections, expected in early 2025. He called for the elections to be held earlier, in November 2024, alongside the Maharashtra elections.
A New Chapter in Delhi’s Leadership
Atishi’s appointment as Chief Minister signifies a new chapter for the Aam Aadmi Party and Delhi’s governance. With her at the helm, she is expected to maintain the continuity of Kejriwal’s policies while carving out her own leadership style as Delhi gears up for the next elections.
