Assam Floods: A Crisis Unfolds

Assam is grappling with severe flooding and landslides following days of relentless rainfall. As of June 2, 2025, the state has reported at least 34 fatalities, with over 78,000 individuals affected across 19 districts. The situation remains dire, prompting authorities to issue orange alerts and prepare for further challenges in the coming days.

Rivers Breach Danger Levels

The Brahmaputra River, a lifeline for millions, has breached its danger mark in multiple locations, including Nimatighat in Jorhat and Majuli. Additionally, tributaries such as the Barak, Burhi Dihing, and Kopili are also flowing above danger levels, exacerbating the flooding. These rising water levels have submerged 175 villages and inundated over 38,000 hectares of standing crops, primarily paddy, leading to significant agricultural losses.

Widespread Displacement and Damage

In Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts, nearly 45,000 people have been displaced due to the floods. The deluge has submerged homes, damaged infrastructure, and disrupted daily life. Kaziranga National Park, renowned for its wildlife, has also been affected, with animals seeking refuge on higher ground. The floodwaters have breached embankments, leading to widespread devastation and complicating rescue operations.

Rescue and Relief Operations

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has activated emergency response teams, deploying helicopters for aerial rescues and distributing relief materials. Over 53,000 individuals have taken shelter in 577 relief camps across the state. Despite these efforts, the scale of the disaster has overwhelmed local resources, and additional support from neighbouring states and the central government is being mobilized.

Forecast and Ongoing Threats

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and yellow alerts for several districts, warning of continued heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. The forecast predicts that the situation may worsen before it improves, with the possibility of more landslides and flash floods. Residents in vulnerable areas are urged to remain vigilant and follow official advisories.

A Call for Support

As Assam battles this unprecedented natural calamity, the need for coordinated relief efforts is paramount. The state’s resilience is being tested, and the support of the national community is crucial in mitigating the impact of this disaster. Continued vigilance, timely interventions, and solidarity will be key in helping Assam navigate through this challenging period.
