Assam Set to Script History as India’s First Direct Oil-Producing State
In a landmark development, Assam is on track to become the first Indian state whose government will directly produce and financially benefit from crude oil. The breakthrough follows a significant hydrocarbon discovery in the Namrup Borhat-1 well, located in Dibrugarh district—a find that could reshape the state’s economic future.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the news on X (formerly Twitter), calling it a “proud moment” for Assam. The exploration was conducted by Oil India Limited (OIL), a public sector giant under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, in which the Assam government holds a substantial stake.
“This makes Assam the first state government to directly produce oil. It ensures exploration success, boosts state revenue through royalties, and strengthens India’s energy security,” Sarma stated.
Why This Discovery Matters
The Namrup Borhat-1 reserve is being hailed as a strategic game-changer, not just for Assam but for India’s broader oil and gas sector. Analysts believe this will transition Assam from a traditional resource supplier to an active stakeholder in production, unlocking fresh revenue streams and reinforcing energy self-sufficiency.
Assam’s Legacy in India’s Oil Economy
Assam has long been a cornerstone of India’s petroleum industry. The state recorded the country’s first oil discovery in Digboi (1889) and continues to be a major crude producer.
According to Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas data, Assam contributed 4,361 thousand metric tonnes (TMT) of crude in 2023-24, ranking third nationally after Rajasthan and Gujarat. Over the past three years, the state supplied 12,518 TMT out of India’s total 88,223 TMT crude output.
With this new discovery, Assam is set to leapfrog into a new era—where it doesn’t just supply oil but controls its production and profits, marking a historic shift in India’s energy landscape.
