Can Government Schemes Unlock Self-Reliance for Adivasi Communities in Assam?
A significant seminar was organized by the Adivasi Welfare and Development Council (AWDC) at the Dr. Bani Kanta Kakoti Auditorium in Guwahati, aiming to empower Assam’s Adivasi communities with the knowledge of ongoing development schemes. Led by Assam Chief Minister Dr. HB Sarma and guided by key figures like Srijut Pitar Dang and Dr. Edmond, the event shed light on a variety of Central and State Government initiatives designed to foster self-dependence. Topics included the financial benefits of handicraft schemes from the Ministry of Textiles, insights from the National Handloom Development Corporation, and opportunities from the Coconut Development Board. Key officials also discussed how Adivasi community members could access bank loans and subsidies to kickstart their businesses, with tea garden owners contributing entrepreneurial ideas.
The Honorable Additional Director and Deputy Director of Handicrafts from the Northeast Regional Office, Guwahati, under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, provided a detailed explanation of the ongoing schemes aimed at fostering self-reliance. They highlighted the financial benefits these schemes offer to the Adivasi Welfare and Development Council (AWDC). The Chief Commercial Manager of the National Handloom Development Corporation Ltd., Khanapara, further elaborated on various schemes and how they can be highly beneficial for the common people of the AWDC.
Field Officers Smti Punchi Rajkhowa and Mr. Kaushik Das, Field Consultants and Marketing experts from the Coconut Development Board, also provided comprehensive insights into the current schemes and their specific benefits for the Adivasi community in Assam.
Retired IPS Officer and OSD, ADGP (SB), Luis Aind, shared his views and offered suggestions, guidance, and instructions on how the Adivasi community can achieve self-reliance by effectively utilizing the government schemes from both Central and State governments.
Bank officers from PNG and Bank of Baroda (BOB) explained the procedures for obtaining subsidy loans, outlining in detail how members of the AWDC could benefit from these financial opportunities.
Additionally, the Managing Director of Mahalaxmi Tea Garden and the owner of Tajaspty Tea Garden, Mr. Atikur Rahman, shared valuable business ideas tailored specifically for the AWDC people of Assam, encouraging entrepreneurship and local economic development.
