The University Grants Commission (UGC) has once again alerted students and the public about the existence of fake universities across India. As of September 2023, the UGC has identified and listed several institutions across various states that are functioning without the necessary approvals or recognitions, misleading students and stakeholders about their legitimacy.
In Andhra Pradesh, institutions like Christ New Testament Deemed University in Guntur and Bible Open University of India in Visakhapatnam are operating without proper accreditation. Similarly, the capital city, Delhi, has several such entities including Commercial University Ltd., United Nations University, and Viswakarma Open University for Self-Employment, among others, that have been declared fake.
Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal also feature on this list with institutions like Badaganvi Sarkar World Open University Education Society in Karnataka, St. John’s University in Kerala, Raja Arabic University in Maharashtra, Sree Bodhi Academy of Higher Education in Puducherry, and several others in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal being flagged.
The UGC has reached out to state governments and their respective Departments of Higher Education, urging them to take appropriate actions against these institutions. The presence of these fake universities not only jeopardizes the educational careers of students but also undermines the integrity of India’s higher education system.
Prospective students are advised to thoroughly check the accreditation status of universities before enrolling. The UGC’s website provides a comprehensive list of recognized universities, ensuring students make informed decisions about their higher education. It’s crucial for students and parents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious institutions to the authorities, helping to maintain the sanctity of India’s education system.
