- Airtel and SpaceX have partnered to introduce Starlink’s satellite-based internet in India.
- The deal aims to improve connectivity in rural areas and enhance Airtel’s ground network.
- Approval from Indian authorities is still pending, as the competition in the satellite broadband market heats up.
Will Starlink Revolutionize India’s Internet?
For years, India’s remote areas have struggled with reliable internet access. Now, Bharti Airtel and SpaceX’s Starlink are teaming up to change that. Their partnership aims to bring high-speed satellite broadband to even the most rural corners of India. Airtel plans to offer Starlink’s services in its retail stores and to business customers, expanding its existing connectivity solutions.
However, the rollout isn’t immediate. SpaceX still needs regulatory approvals, including security clearance from the Union Home Ministry and landing rights from the Indian National Space Promotion & Authorisation Centre (In-SPACE). If approved, Starlink could significantly improve internet access in underserved regions.
A Fierce Race for Satellite Internet
The Indian satellite broadband market is becoming increasingly competitive. Reliance Jio has already entered the race through a joint venture with SES, while Amazon’s Project Kuiper is also eyeing India’s broadband sector. With Airtel’s existing alliance with Eutelsat OneWeb and now Starlink, the competition is heating up.
According to Gopal Vittal, Airtel’s managing director, this partnership is a game-changer. It will allow Airtel to provide affordable, high-speed broadband across India, reaching people who previously had little to no connectivity.
The Future of Internet in India
With India’s satellite broadband market expected to grow 36% annually and reach $1.9 billion by 2030, this partnership could shape the future of internet access in the country. If regulatory approvals come through, Starlink could play a crucial role in bridging India’s digital divide, making fast and reliable internet accessible to millions.
