Key Highlights:
✔ Free Electricity: 1.67 crore households in Bihar to get up to 125 units free from August 2025.
✔ Solar Power Expansion: Govt to install rooftop solar plants, targeting 10,000 MW in 3 years.
✔ Pre-Election Push: Move follows teacher recruitment drive, reinforcing welfare focus before polls.
Patna, July 17, 2025 – In a significant pre-election announcement, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar declared on Thursday that domestic consumers across the state will receive up to 125 units of electricity free every month, starting August 1, 2025. The move, expected to benefit 1.67 crore families, is seen as a major welfare push ahead of the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025.
Taking to social media platform X, Kumar stated, “From the very beginning, our government has ensured affordable electricity for all. Now, we’ve decided that from August 1, domestic consumers won’t pay a single rupee for up to 125 units monthly—benefiting 1.67 crore households.”
Solar Power: The Next Big Step
Beyond free electricity, the JD(U)-led government unveiled an ambitious solar energy plan. Over the next three years, solar power plants will be installed on rooftops or nearby public spaces with residents’ consent.
- For economically weaker families, the Kutir Jyoti scheme will cover full installation costs.
- Other households will receive government subsidies to adopt solar energy.
- The initiative aims to generate 10,000 megawatts of solar power, reducing dependency on conventional electricity.
Pre-Election Welfare Push
The announcement follows a series of populist measures by the Bihar government. Just a day earlier, Kumar directed the Education Department to fast-track teacher recruitment, emphasizing 35% reservation for women (exclusive to Bihar residents).
Political analysts suggest the free electricity scheme could bolster Kumar’s pro-development image amid rising competition. With opposition parties gearing up for polls, Bihar’s power and solar reforms may become a key election issue.
What’s Next?
As the state prepares for the 2025 elections, all eyes are on how these policies translate into voter sentiment. Will free electricity and green energy be the game-changer for Nitish Kumar? Only time will tell.
