How Dangerous is Bird Flu and Why is Maharashtra Taking Strict Action?
Bird flu, also known as avian influenza (H5N1), is a highly contagious virus that spreads among birds and can sometimes infect humans. After several poultry birds died in Mangli village on January 25, samples were sent for testing, and the results confirmed the presence of the virus. To prevent further spread, the Chandrapur district administration immediately declared an ‘alert zone’ covering 10 km around the affected area.
As part of containment measures, all infected birds will be culled scientifically by a Rapid Response Team. Dead poultry will be safely disposed of, while remaining poultry feed and eggs will also be destroyed. Additionally, movement of live and dead chickens, eggs, and poultry equipment has been strictly prohibited. Authorities have also ordered poultry farms and chicken shops within a 5 km radius to remain closed until the situation is under control.
What Happens Next?
Health and veterinary officials are closely monitoring the situation. The affected poultry farms are being disinfected using chemicals like sodium hypochlorite and potassium permanganate to eliminate traces of the virus. The government has urged people in the region to avoid handling poultry and report any unusual bird deaths immediately.
While bird flu outbreaks among poultry are not uncommon, swift action is necessary to prevent transmission to humans. Residents are advised to follow all precautionary guidelines and avoid consuming poultry products from affected areas until authorities declare the zone safe.
