Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has unveiled a groundbreaking 1,000 kW ultra-fast charging system, claiming it can recharge EVs in the same time it takes to refuel a gasoline car. This marks a major leap in charging technology, significantly reducing EV charging time and addressing a key concern for potential buyers.
BYD’s Super E-Platform: A Game Changer
BYD’s “super e-platform” promises to revolutionize EV charging by delivering 1,000 kW of power, allowing vehicles to gain 400 km of range in just five minutes. This doubles the speed of Tesla’s Superchargers, which currently max out at 500 kW.
“In order to completely solve our users’ charging anxiety, we have been pursuing a goal to make the charging time of electric vehicles as short as the refuelling time of petrol vehicles,” said BYD founder Wang Chuanfu.
Which BYD Cars Will Feature This Technology?
The Han L sedan and Tang L SUV—both priced from 270,000 yuan ($37,330)—will be the first models equipped with the super e-platform. To support this innovation, BYD will construct over 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations across China.
Impact on Tesla
BYD’s latest announcement comes at a challenging time for Tesla, which has seen its stock plummet by 15% in a single day (March 10). The company is facing declining sales, missed targets, and increased competition from Chinese EV makers.
Adding to its troubles, CEO Elon Musk’s political controversies and delays in delivering fully autonomous vehicles have left investors anxious. Meanwhile, BYD and other Chinese automakers are rapidly expanding their market share with more affordable and technologically advanced EVs.
The Future of EV Charging
BYD’s 1,000 kW charging technology sets a new benchmark for the EV industry. As charging speeds approach the convenience of traditional refueling, range anxiety may soon become a thing of the past, accelerating global EV adoption.
