Why Is Rahul Gandhi Appointed as Leader of Opposition?
The extended Congress Working Committee (CWC), the highest executive forum of the Congress party, unanimously passed a resolution to appoint Rahul Gandhi as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha. This decision comes after recognizing Gandhi’s pivotal role in the 2024 Lok Sabha campaign. During the meeting in Delhi, Gandhi, who has successfully contested from Wayanad and Raebareli, expressed his intention to consider the proposal. However, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge gently reminded him that the resolution passed by the CWC mandated his acceptance of the post.
Unanimous Support for Rahul Gandhi
Congress general secretary KC Venugopal stated that all participants in the meeting were unanimous in their view that Rahul Gandhi should assume the role of LoP. Venugopal highlighted Gandhi’s leadership in addressing crucial issues such as unemployment, price rise, women’s issues, the Agniveer scheme, and social justice during the election campaign. According to Venugopal, these issues need to be vigorously pursued within Parliament, and Rahul Gandhi is deemed the best person to lead this effort in the Lok Sabha.
A Stronger and Vigilant Opposition
The CWC’s resolution underscores the need for a better, stronger, and vigilant opposition under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership to protect the Constitution and address the pressing issues facing the nation. With his experience and commitment, Gandhi is expected to effectively lead the Congress party’s efforts in Parliament, ensuring that the voices of the people are heard and addressed.
This move by the CWC marks a significant step in reinforcing the Congress party’s position in the Lok Sabha and strengthening its role as a key player in Indian politics.
