The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast heavy rains across many districts of Tamil Nadu as Cyclone Dana is expected to form over the east-central Bay of Bengal by October 23. The cyclone is predicted to bring significant rainfall, prompting a yellow alert for various regions.
Cyclone Formation and Expected Path
A low-pressure area is developing over the east-central Bay of Bengal, which is likely to intensify into Cyclone Dana and move northwest towards the Odisha-West Bengal coast by October 24. The cyclonic circulation has already caused moderate rainfall in Chennai and surrounding districts such as Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur.
Heavy Rainfall and Flood Alerts
The RMC has warned that heavy rains are expected on October 21 in several areas, including:
- Ghat regions of Coimbatore and Tirupur
- Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tiruchi, Dindigul, Madurai, Pudukottai, Ariyalur, and Perambalur
Flood alerts have been issued in Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, and Tiruvannamalai districts due to rising water levels in the Thenpennai River. The Krishnagiri Reservoir Project (KRP) dam has released 2,000 cusecs of water, prompting additional flood warnings for Harur and Pappireddipatti areas.
Advisory for Fishermen and Preparedness
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea as winds reaching speeds of 35-45 kmph are expected along the Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar, and Camorin area. The Fire and Rescue Services and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are on standby, ready to assist in case of emergencies. The ongoing rainfall is expected to reduce temperatures in the region over the coming days.
