- Donald Trump shared PM Modi’s podcast with Lex Fridman, where Modi praised Trump’s “America First” approach.
- US tariffs on Indian goods are set to take effect from April 2, testing the strong personal bond between the two leaders.
- India is negotiating tariff reductions on American goods, including automobiles, agriculture, and chemicals.
Is This a Sign of Strength or Rising Tensions?
Donald Trump’s move to share PM Modi’s podcast on his Truth account comes at a crucial time. While the two leaders share a mutual admiration for prioritizing their nations first, their relationship is now facing pressure due to US plans to impose reciprocal tariffs on India starting April 2.
During the Lex Fridman Podcast, Modi explained why he and Trump connect so well:
“His reflection showed his America First spirit, just as I believe in nation first. I stand for India first and that’s why we connect so well.”
However, trade tensions are rising. The US has targeted India with new tariffs, forcing New Delhi to reconsider reducing duties on American products such as cars, agricultural goods, and chemicals. Reports suggest that India has already lowered some levies on US imports to maintain strong trade relations.
What’s Next for US-India Trade Relations?
Despite these tensions, both leaders have a history of diplomatic cooperation. PM Modi was among the first world leaders to meet Trump after his return to the White House, highlighting India’s importance as a strategic partner.
Trade between India and the US hit $127 billion in 2023, making America India’s largest trading partner. The two nations are now working on a multi-sector trade deal, expected to be finalized by fall this year.
Interestingly, during the podcast, Modi also criticized global institutions like the United Nations, saying they are becoming irrelevant—a viewpoint shared by Trump and Elon Musk.
With growing economic ties and political negotiations underway, the coming months will determine whether US-India relations strengthen or face further friction due to trade disputes.
