In a recent revelation that challenges common perceptions, electric vehicles (EVs) have been found to be significantly more dependable than their internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts. According to a report by a leading UK-based breakdown and recovery service provider, Start Rescue, EVs are 59% less likely to encounter breakdowns on the road. This statistic is drawn from an extensive analysis of vehicles, new to 10 years old, underscoring the reliability of electric technology in modern transportation.
Lee Puffett, the Managing Director of Start Rescue, highlighted the robust performance of over a million EVs currently in operation across the UK. The data presents a compelling case for the adoption of electric vehicles, suggesting that drivers opting for EVs face a substantially lower risk of being stranded due to vehicle failure. Puffett pointed out that the hesitation many potential buyers feel towards electric vehicles is more psychological than based on practical concerns. The comparison of EV batteries to those in mobile phones or laptops, he notes, is misguided. EV batteries are designed to maintain a larger charge capacity for extended periods, ensuring a reliable driving range that can quell range anxiety among users.
However, attention to the vehicle’s 12-volt battery is crucial for avoiding the most common reasons for service calls. This battery is responsible for powering vital functions such as the vehicle’s ignition, dashboard displays, and other essential electronics. Contrary to what some might expect, EVs are actually less prone to flat battery issues compared to petrol or diesel vehicles. Start Rescue’s data indicates that only 23.7% of EV-related call-outs were due to flat batteries, in contrast to 29.7% for traditional vehicles.
The maintenance of the 12-volt battery is essential, with regular use being key to its longevity. Despite the advanced technology driving EVs, they still rely on this conventional battery system for several critical operations, including starting the car and opening doors. This insight not only challenges misconceptions about electric vehicle reliability but also encourages drivers to consider making the switch, offering a blend of environmental sustainability and reduced likelihood of breakdowns.
