On June 14, 2024, a significant review meeting was held at the Handicrafts Bhawan, located on the 3rd Floor Conference Hall, Baba Kharak Singh Marg, Connaught Place, New Delhi. Organized by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, the meeting aimed to discuss strategies for popularizing Handicrafts Bhawan and boosting business opportunities for artisans.
The primary agenda of this meeting was to evaluate the ongoing and future developmental activities at Handicrafts Bhawan. The goal was to enhance the building’s familiarity and maximize its utilization to benefit the artisan community. This review included a detailed PowerPoint presentation on the Bhawan’s potential.
Handicrafts Bhawan is recognized nationwide as a hub for handloom and handicraft products. It houses sales outlets from every State Corporation, where they display and sell regional goods. These corporations source their products from local craftsmen and small business owners, thereby facilitating business and providing marketing assistance for their unique handmade products.
In light of this, the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) is contemplating establishing one of the premier global marketing centers to ensure the sustainable growth of the artisan community. The core objective of this event was to formulate a strategy to promote Handicrafts Bhawan effectively and utilize the available space optimally. Furthermore, the aim was to foster entrepreneurship among craftsmen by providing robust institutional support and overseeing business proposals.
Prominent attendees of the meeting included Senior Officers of the Ministry of Textiles such as S/Shri V. P. Thakur, Shri Virendra Kumar, Regional Director (Handicrafts), Shri Sekhar Srivastava, Joint Director (Handicrafts), and Shri Anuj Ojha, Joint Development Commissioner (Handicrafts). They engaged in an in-depth discussion with Mrs. Amrit Raj, Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), about implementing suitable plans for the craftsmen and weavers.
During the meeting, Mrs. Amrit Raj emphasized the importance of insightful recommendations from all Senior Officers. She stressed that these suggestions would be critical for adopting effective strategies that serve the broader interests of the artisan community.
The discussion covered various facets of promoting Handicrafts Bhawan, including enhancing its visibility, creating a comprehensive marketing plan, and ensuring the efficient use of space within the building.
