  • A devastating fire destroyed twelve flats housing Kashmiri Pandit families in Jammu’s Purkhoo camp.
  • Families lost essential belongings, including cash, documents, and valuable items, leaving them homeless once again.
  • Victims urge authorities for immediate relief and support as they grapple with the extensive losses.

How Did This Tragic Fire Break Out?

In a heartbreaking incident, a fire broke out in the Purkhoo camp on the outskirts of Jammu city, engulfing twelve flats that served as homes for around six families of displaced Kashmiri Pandits. The fire reportedly began in one of the older quarters and spread rapidly, giving residents little time to salvage their belongings. Though fire service personnel arrived quickly to control the blaze, they couldn’t prevent the extensive damage that left the families with nothing but ashes. Fortunately, no one was physically injured, but the emotional and financial toll is immense.

Families recount losing essential items such as cash, personal records, and gold, which were all destroyed in the blaze. Naveen Pandita, one of the residents, expressed the gravity of the loss, sharing that everything was taken from them in the fire. “We are once again homeless,” Pandita stated, describing the overwhelming devastation felt by all the affected families. The sense of helplessness is further deepened by what they see as a lack of immediate support; no one from the district administration or relief department has yet visited the site to assess the situation and assist the displaced families.

What Assistance Are the Families Seeking Now?

As the families try to cope with the aftermath, they’re appealing to the government for urgent assistance. They’re asking for compensation similar to that offered in the past to victims of other disasters, like the residents affected by the Warwan tragedy in Kishtwar. They have specifically requested the intervention of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to address their needs swiftly, as they face the daunting task of rebuilding their lives from scratch.

Conclusion: A Plea for Immediate Relief and Support

This tragedy highlights the vulnerable position of displaced families in Jammu, many of whom are already coping with the challenges of relocation and limited resources. For the affected Kashmiri Pandit families in Purkhoo camp, this fire was not only a loss of property but a shattering blow to their sense of stability and security. With their appeals reaching the ears of local leaders, these families hope for rapid action and meaningful assistance to help them recover from this unexpected disaster and rebuild their lives once again.
