How Serious is the Government About the NEET-UG Issue?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reassured students nationwide that his government is taking the NEET-UG controversy very seriously and is working on a “war footing” to prevent such incidents in the future. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, he emphasized that those who jeopardize the future of the youth will face severe consequences.
During his Motion of Thanks to the President’s address in the Lok Sabha, PM Modi stated, “I want to tell every student of the country, every youth of the country that the government is very serious about preventing such incidents and we are taking one step after another to fulfill our responsibilities on a war footing.” He confirmed that continuous arrests are being made across the country in connection with the alleged “paper leak.”
What Measures Are Being Taken to Prevent Such Incidents?
The Prime Minister highlighted the notification of the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act and the central government’s efforts to strengthen the entire system of conducting examinations. This comes amid criticism from the Opposition regarding paper leaks in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).
On Monday, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, criticized the NEET exam, calling it a “commercial exam” designed for wealthy students rather than meritorious ones. He claimed that NEET students believe the exam favors rich candidates and excludes those from poorer backgrounds. Gandhi also demanded a one-day discussion in Parliament on the NEET issue, stating that over two crore students have been affected by repeated paper leaks.
What Triggered the Controversy?
The NEET UG examination, conducted by the National Testing Agency on May 5, saw 23 lakh candidates appearing at 4,750 centers in 571 cities across India and 14 cities abroad. The results, declared on June 4, caused an uproar due to multiple issues raised by aspirants. An unprecedented 67 candidates achieving a perfect score of 720 out of 720 marks led to widespread protests, further fueling the controversy.
Prime Minister Modi’s strong stance and the ongoing arrests reflect the government’s commitment to addressing the NEET-UG issues and ensuring a fair examination process for all students. The government aims to restore trust in the examination system and provide equal opportunities for students from all backgrounds.
