As the Lok Sabha elections draw near, the political battle in Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s bastion, intensifies, with the BJP poised to maintain its stronghold against the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) collaboration under the INDIA alliance. Scheduled for May 7th in a single phase, with results on June 4th, Gujarat’s political landscape is under the spotlight, following the BJP’s remarkable victory in the 2022 state assembly elections, securing 156 of 182 seats.
The BJP’s confidence in sweeping all 26 Lok Sabha seats is palpable, with state unit chief CR Paatil predicting significant victory margins. The Congress aims to recapture its 2009 success when it claimed 11 seats, while a win for the AAP could further establish its emerging opposition presence.
The electoral contest spans across Gujarat’s diverse regions: Saurashtra and Kutch, north Gujarat, central Gujarat, and south Gujarat. Each region presents its own dynamics, from the long-standing BJP dominance in Saurashtra and Kutch to the pivotal tribal seats in central Gujarat. Notable candidates include Union ministers Mansukh Mandaviya and Parshottam Rupala in Porbandar and Rajkot, respectively, and BJP stalwart Amit Shah in Gandhinagar.
South Gujarat garners particular interest, with the AAP challenging the BJP in Bharuch through a strategic alliance with the Congress, spotlighting AAP’s Chaitar Vasava against BJP veteran Mansukh Vasava. Meanwhile, Gujarat BJP chief C R Paatil aims for another record-breaking win in Navsari.
This electoral battle in Gujarat not only tests the BJP’s enduring appeal but also gauges the effectiveness of opposition unity in challenging the ruling party’s dominance.
