In a significant political turn of events in Haryana, the alliance between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) concluded abruptly this Tuesday. The coalition’s collapse stemmed from disagreements over seat-sharing for the upcoming parliamentary seats in the state, with the BJP refusing to allot any of the 10 seats to its now-former ally, the JJP.
Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has taken decisive action by resigning, along with his cabinet, to Governor Bandaru Dattatreya. Khattar is now set to form a new cabinet, excluding JJP members led by Dushyant Chautala. A crucial meeting of BJP MLAs has been convened in Chandigarh, with invitations extended to Independent MLAs as well.
The BJP, currently holding 41 seats in the 90-member assembly, boasts the support of 6 out of 7 Independent MLAs and Haryana Lokhit Party MLA Gopal Kanda. These supporters have already congregated in Chandigarh to participate in Khattar’s assembly, ensuring a stable backing of at least 48 MLAs for the Chief Minister.
Interestingly, five JJP MLAs have also made their way to Chandigarh, reportedly to support the Khattar-led government, hinting at potential shifts within the political landscape.
According to Sudesh Kataria, the Chief Minister’s chief media coordinator, Khattar is scheduled for a re-oath taking ceremony with his revamped cabinet at 1:30 pm Tuesday. The BJP’s central leadership has intervened by appointing Union Minister Arjun Munda and national general secretary Tarun Chugh as observers to oversee the new leader’s election.
This development follows a brief interaction between Dushyant Chautala and BJP president J.P. Nadda, which concluded without a resolution to the seat-sharing dispute. Chautala is expected to further discuss the matter with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi.
As Haryana braces for this new political chapter, the dissolution of the BJP-JJP alliance and the ensuing cabinet reshuffle underscore the dynamic nature of state politics, setting the stage for the upcoming electoral contests.
