Heavy Rain Disrupts Kerala, Relief Expected After May 27

Unprecedented Rainfall Causes Widespread Disruption

Kerala is grappling with severe weather conditions as heavy rains have disrupted normal life across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for several districts, including Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours. The persistent downpour has led to waterlogging, landslides, and damage to infrastructure, affecting daily activities and prompting authorities to take precautionary measures.

Fatalities and Property Damage

The relentless rains have resulted in tragic incidents and significant property damage. In Alappuzha district, an 18-year-old woman lost her life when a roadside shop collapsed due to the heavy rain. In Kainakary, a 55-year-old man drowned after being swept into a canal by strong winds. Additionally, an 80-year-old man was found dead in a waterlogged pit in Thrissur. Over 200 houses have been partially or completely damaged, and several others have suffered injuries due to collapsing structures.

Educational Institutions Closed

In response to the adverse weather conditions, the district administrations of Kottayam, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur have declared holidays for all educational institutions, including schools, colleges, and tuition centres, on May 27. However, previously scheduled public examinations will proceed as planned. Authorities have advised residents to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in low-lying areas prone to flooding.

Transportation Disruptions

The heavy rains have caused significant disruptions in transportation services. Rail services have been affected due to fallen trees and waterlogging on tracks, leading to delays and cancellations of several trains. Additionally, road traffic has been hindered by landslides and waterlogging, particularly in hilly areas. The state disaster management authority has urged the public to stay updated on weather alerts and avoid traveling through affected regions unless absolutely necessary.

Coastal Areas on High Alert

Coastal regions are experiencing rough seas, with areas like Chavakkad in Thrissur, Ponnani in Malappuram, and Kannamali in Ernakulam facing heightened risks of sea erosion and flooding. The IMD has issued warnings for fishermen and coastal residents, advising them to refrain from venturing into the sea and to take necessary precautions to safeguard life and property.

Outlook for May 27 and Beyond

While the IMD has indicated that the intensity of rainfall may reduce after May 27, the situation remains critical, especially in the northern districts. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have deployed teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to assist in rescue and relief operations. Residents are urged to stay informed through official channels and adhere to safety advisories issued by local authorities.

Conclusion

Kerala is facing one of its most challenging weather events in recent years, with heavy rains causing widespread disruption and posing significant risks to public safety. While the forecast suggests a possible reduction in rainfall intensity after May 27, the immediate focus remains on managing the current crisis and providing relief to affected communities. The resilience and cooperation of residents, along with the prompt response of authorities, will be crucial in navigating this challenging situation.
