The GI certificate officially links Mising Handicrafts to their geographical origin in Assam, ensuring authenticity and exclusivity. The recognition stems from years of effort, starting with an application submitted by the Handicraft Development Institute in Golaghat. With support from NABARD, these textiles are now set to conquer international markets, showcasing the unique craftsmanship of the Mising tribal community.
The International GI Workshop also served as a platform for collaboration, with participants from Japan, Italy, and France exploring the cultural and commercial potential of Indian handicrafts. Products like Assamese Gamocha, a traditional woven cloth, were exhibited, drawing significant interest from global trade representatives.

The GI certification ensures that Mising Handicrafts remain unique to their origin, preventing imitation and promoting fair trade. By securing this status, artisans gain access to better opportunities and a wider market. It’s not just about preserving tradition but also about empowering local communities.
Since its registration in March 2023, efforts have focused on increasing awareness among artisans, improving product quality, and boosting exports. The involvement of over 10,000 artisans aims to enhance both production and livelihoods.
