Strategic Maritime Expansion
India has taken a major step toward enhancing its naval power by finalizing a high-profile defence deal with France for the purchase of 26 Rafale-M fighter jets. Valued at approximately ₹63,000 crore (roughly $7.4 billion), the agreement signals India’s commitment to strengthening its maritime defence architecture and solidifying its strategic partnership with France. The Rafale-M, the naval variant of the Rafale fighter aircraft made by Dassault Aviation, is tailor-made for operations from aircraft carriers, making it a significant addition to India’s expanding naval fleet.
Replacing Aging Fleet
The newly ordered jets are set to replace the Indian Navy’s aging fleet of Russian-origin MiG-29K and MiG-29KUB aircraft. In addition to the aircraft, the package includes a suite of advanced weaponry and logistical support. Notably, the Rafale-Ms will be equipped with the Meteor air-to-air missile, renowned for its long-range precision, as well as the Exocet anti-ship missile, strengthening India’s offensive capabilities in both air and maritime domains. The package also covers performance-based logistics, crew training, simulators, and ground support equipment.
Enhancing Indigenous Capabilities
In line with the Indian government’s “Make in India” initiative, the deal includes significant provisions for indigenization and technology integration. Discussions are ongoing to incorporate Indian-built systems, such as the indigenous Uttam AESA radar, Astra beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles, and Rudram air-to-surface anti-radiation missiles, into future configurations of the Rafale-M. Moreover, the deal paves the way for setting up a dedicated Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Uttar Pradesh. This MRO hub will serve both the Rafale and Mirage 2000 fleets, thereby boosting domestic aerospace infrastructure and creating skilled employment opportunities.
Strengthening Strategic Partnerships
The Rafale-M acquisition marks a new chapter in the evolving India–France defence partnership. It builds on the earlier 2016 deal under which India procured 36 Rafale fighter jets for its Air Force. France remains India’s second-largest arms supplier, and this deal solidifies its position as a key defence partner. Both countries share common interests in maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, and this collaboration is seen as a strong signal to China and other regional powers about India’s increasing defence capabilities. The first Rafale-M is expected to be delivered within 37 months of contract signing, with full delivery slated by 2028. Ahead of the contract finalization, the aircraft had undergone successful compatibility trials on the decks of INS Vikrant in early 2023, reinforcing their suitability for carrier-based operations. With these jets in place, the Indian Navy will be better positioned to respond to high-seas challenges, from countering hostile naval forces to safeguarding maritime trade routes. This acquisition also supports India’s broader goal of becoming a net security provider in the Indian Ocean Region.
