India’s Diplomatic Push to Save Nimisha Priya from Yemen’s Death Row
In a tense diplomatic effort, India is pulling all available resources to assist Nimisha Priya, a 37-year-old Kerala nurse sentenced to death in Yemen for the 2017 killing of a local businessman. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Thursday that the Indian government is in constant touch with Yemeni authorities and allied nations to seek a resolution before it’s too late.
Nimisha Priya’s death sentence was temporarily halted just a day before its execution, following urgent interventions from Indian officials. The case, which has drawn widespread attention, remains highly sensitive, with Indian diplomats working behind the scenes to negotiate a possible pardon or reduced sentence.
Legal and Diplomatic Efforts in Full Swing
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India has provided legal assistance, including appointing a lawyer to represent Priya’s family. “We are extending every possible support, engaging with local authorities, and coordinating with her family to explore all options,” he said.
The Indian government has also reached out to “friendly governments” that may have influence in Yemen, though specifics remain undisclosed due to the delicate nature of the negotiations. With Yemen embroiled in civil conflict, securing consular access and legal reprieve has been exceptionally challenging.
A Glimmer of Hope Amid Uncertainty
While the temporary stay offers a brief respite, the clock is ticking. The MEA has assured continuous monitoring of the case, but with Yemen’s unstable judicial and political climate, the outcome remains uncertain.
For now, Nimisha Priya’s fate hangs in the balance as India races against time to bring her home.
