Introduction: Enhancing Naval Capabilities
India is set to bolster its maritime defence with the imminent commissioning of INS Tamal, an advanced stealth frigate built in Russia. This marks a significant addition to the Indian Navy’s fleet, enhancing its operational reach and strategic capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region.
Strategic Partnership with Russia
INS Tamal is the second ship in a series of four Talwar-class frigates being jointly developed by India and Russia. The first of these, INS Tushil, was commissioned in December 2024. The collaboration underscores the enduring defence ties between the two nations, with a focus on advanced naval technology and joint development efforts.
Advanced Design and Capabilities
Built at Russia’s Yantar Shipyard, INS Tamal is an upgraded Krivak-III class frigate, designed for blue-water operations. The ship spans 125 meters in length and displaces 3,900 tonnes. It is equipped with state-of-the-art systems, including BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and vertically launched Shtil surface-to-air missiles, providing formidable offensive and defensive capabilities.
Indigenous Contributions
Approximately 26% of INS Tamal’s components are sourced from Indian manufacturers, highlighting the growing indigenous capabilities in defence production. Systems from companies like BrahMos Aerospace and Bharat Electronics have been integrated into the frigate, reflecting a successful collaboration between Indian and Russian industries.
Operational Readiness
Around 200 Indian Navy personnel are currently in St. Petersburg, Russia, undergoing training and participating in sea trials for INS Tamal. These trials are expected to last for about six weeks, after which the ship will be prepared for its voyage to India. Upon arrival, it will join the Western Fleet, based at Karwar Naval Base, complementing INS Tushil in enhancing India’s maritime defence posture.

The commissioning of INS Tamal will mark the last warship to be imported by the Indian Navy, as the country continues to focus on indigenous shipbuilding capabilities.
