The United States narrowly escaped what could have been a devastating disaster on Tuesday when the Baltimore Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed following a collision with the Singapore-flagged vessel, Dali. The ship encountered a critical power failure, resulting in the catastrophic incident that plunged it into the Patapsco River.
In the immediate aftermath, a massive search and rescue operation was launched for eight missing construction workers. Thanks to the diligent efforts of the rescue team, two individuals were rescued, though, regrettably, the search for the remaining six was suspended on Wednesday morning, with the workers presumed dead. Amidst the unfolding crisis, the Indian crew aboard the Dali emerged as unsung heroes. Their timely mayday warning enabled the Maryland Department of Transportation to close the bridge to traffic, averting further potential loss of life.
President Joe Biden, in a Tuesday press conference, referred to the event as a “terrible accident,” commending the crew for their foresight in alerting the authorities, which he deemed instrumental in saving numerous lives. The alert led to a dispatcher warning over the radio about the cargo ship’s loss of steering, prompting police to halt traffic on the bridge in under 90 seconds, as reported by the Associated Press.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore praised the Indian crew and local pilots for their heroic actions, emphasizing their role in stopping vehicular traffic and thus, preventing a more severe disaster. “These people are heroes. They saved lives last night,” Moore remarked, echoing a sentiment widely shared on social media platforms, where netizens expressed their gratitude and admiration for the crew’s quick thinking and bravery.
Synergy Marine Group, the company managing the vessel, assured that all crew members are safe and accounted for, while also acknowledging the tragic presumption of death for the six workers from Latin America. This incident, while tragic, underscores the critical importance of swift action and communication in crisis situations, showcasing how a timely warning can indeed save lives.
