Indian Army’s Akash Prime Missile Shines in High-Altitude Ladakh Trials

In a major boost to India’s indigenous defence systems, the Indian Army has successfully tested the Akash Prime surface-to-air missile at an altitude exceeding 15,000 feet in the Ladakh sector, defence officials confirmed. The high-altitude trials, conducted in collaboration with DRDO scientists, demonstrated the missile’s ability to strike fast-moving aerial targets with pinpoint accuracy—even in the thin air of extreme elevations.

Precision Strikes in Extreme Conditions

Akash Prime system scored two direct hits on manoeuvring target aircraft during the test, proving its operational readiness in challenging environments. The missile, an upgraded version of the original Akash system, features an advanced seeker for improved target engagement in adverse weather and rugged terrain.

“The Akash Prime has showcased its combat effectiveness by neutralizing high-speed aerial threats under difficult high-altitude conditions,” a defence official stated.

A Strategic Asset in Modern Warfare

The Akash Prime system has already proven its worth in real combat scenarios, particularly during Operation Sindoor, where it was deployed to counter Pakistani drone incursions and aerial threats, including Chinese-origin aircraft and Turkish-made drones. Its success has paved the way for broader induction into the Indian Army’s air defence network, with plans to equip the third and fourth Akash regiments with the Prime variant.

India’s Push for Self-Reliant Defence

As part of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, the Akash missile system represents a critical stride in domestic defence production. The medium-range surface-to-air missile is designed to protect military installations, troops, and strategic assets from a variety of aerial threats, including drones, helicopters, and fighter jets.

Key Features of Akash Prime:

  • Multi-target engagement with real-time threat detection
  • Flexible deployment in autonomous or group modes
  • Phased array radar for precise missile guidance

Operation Sindoor: A Test of Strength

The Akash system played a pivotal role in repelling a massive drone and missile assault by Pakistan along the Western Border and LoC in May 2025. Indian forces reportedly shot down over 50 drones during the operation, while also neutralizing cross-border attacks.

“Pakistan launched coordinated drone strikes and ceasefire violations, but our air defence systems provided a befitting response,” an Army statement revealed.

The Road Ahead

With the successful Ladakh trials, the Akash Prime is set to become a cornerstone of India’s multi-layered air defence strategy, reinforcing the nation’s ability to safeguard its skies against evolving threats. As tensions persist along the borders, this indigenous missile system stands as a testament to India’s growing defence prowess.
