- Indian Railways is preparing to launch its first hydrogen-powered train, marking a major step towards green mobility.
- Built entirely in India, the train will operate on the Jind-Sonipat route, covering 89 km under Northern Railway’s Delhi Division.
- With an impressive 1,200 horsepower, it will be one of the most powerful hydrogen trains in the world.
How Will This Hydrogen Train Change Rail Transport in India?
India is making history by introducing a hydrogen-fuelled train, a move that places the country alongside global leaders like Germany, France, and China in green transportation. Unlike conventional diesel trains, this hydrogen-powered train will produce zero emissions, with only water vapor as its byproduct. The technology behind it involves fuel cells that generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, creating a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to traditional fuel sources.
Developed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, this train is a pilot project under Indian Railways’ broader plan to introduce 35 such hydrogen trains. The Ministry of Railways has allocated Rs 2,800 crore for this initiative in 2023-24, showcasing India’s commitment to clean energy solutions.
What Makes India’s Hydrogen Train Stand Out?
One of the most exciting features of this hydrogen train is its unmatched power capacity of 1,200 HP—more than double the capacity of similar hydrogen trains in other countries, which typically have engines between 500-600 HP. This makes India’s version one of the longest and most powerful hydrogen-powered trains globally.
The train will first run on the 89 km Jind-Sonipat route in Northern India. If successful, this eco-friendly transport model could be expanded to more routes across the country. With this launch, India is taking a bold step towards achieving its sustainable transportation goals, reducing carbon emissions, and modernizing its railway system for the future.
