Iran Says Over 400 Killed Since Start of War with Israel

Skyrocketing Casualties in Iran
Iranian authorities have reported catastrophic losses: more than 400 individuals killed both civilians and military since a surge of deadly Israeli airstrikes began on June 13, 2025. Independent human rights groups put the toll even higher, estimating around 450 fatalities, including scores of civilians, as well as injuries numbering in the thousands. Israel claims that its strikes targeted nuclear and military facilities to stall Iran’s nuclear program and hit key leadership within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Operation “Rising Lion” Unleashed
Named “Operation Rising Lion,” Israel’s June 13 air campaign focused on nuclear enrichment, missile development, centrifuge workshops, and IRGC bases, with some strikes reaching near Tehran. Satellite imagery and eyewitness reports confirm widespread structural damage, prompting fears that Israel’s action sets back Iran’s nuclear ambitions by “two or three years.”

Iran’s Immediate Missile Response
In a swift counterattack, Iran launched hundreds of ballistic missiles and drones one source cites over 450 missiles and 1,000 drones aimed at military and civilian infrastructure in Israel. These barrages caused limited damage, according to Israeli officials, with at least 24-25 civilian deaths and hundreds wounded.

High-Value Targets Hit
Israel asserts it eliminated senior IRGC commanders such as Saeed Izadi and Benham Shariyari credited with orchestrating militant operations against Israel. Iranian state media and independent monitors confirm significant military losses, including reported hits on scientists and nuclear specialists.

Humanitarian Disaster Unfolding
The strikes triggered mass panic and displacement across Iran. Reports documented the exodus from Tehran: cities like Gilan, Mazandaran, and Alborz received a flood of evacuees, triggering shortages of food, fuel, and medicines. Iran’s government halted internet access and restricted internal travel in an effort to contain both chaos and information.

Regional and Global Reverberations
The conflict is reverberating across the Middle East. Yemen’s Houthi rebels have threatened US shipping lanes if American forces support Israel. Lebanon’s Hezbollah is being warned to stay out, while global oil markets have become unstable due to fears of escalation.

Diplomatic Dead Ends and Ceasefire Hopes
Diplomatic efforts led by European nations such as France, Germany, the UK, plus Russia have struggled to gain traction. Iran dismissed EU proposals on nuclear constraints as unrealistic, linking peace to a halt in Israeli military actions. Former US President Donald Trump, while suggesting he may back a ceasefire depending on conditions, has delayed decisions on direct US involvement.

US on the Sidelines, but On Alert
While the Biden administration is facilitating evacuations and aiding missile defence in Israel, it denies direct involvement in the strikes. Nonetheless, American aircraft carriers are being stationed nearby, and Washington warns of consequences if Iran targets US personnel.

Warnings of a Lengthy Conflict
Israeli officials caution that a protracted war is on the horizon. Prime Minister Netanyahu has warned that Israel is ready for a sustained campaign to dismantle Iran’s nuclear and missile capacity. Conversely, Iran’s foreign minister maintains that diplomacy remains possible but only if Israeli aggression stops.

Nuclear Sites in the Balance
Amid continued strikes, reports indicate that sensitive sites like Iran’s centrifuge workshop in Isfahan and the heavy water reactor in Arak have come under fire. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed damage to a centrifuge facility, though no nuclear material was present, underscoring the fine line between military necessity and nuclear peril.

Escalation Risks and Global Concern
Global powers including China, Russia, Turkey, and UN member states stress the urgent need for de-escalation. At the same time, European-led nuclear talks continue to stall, overshadowed by the violence and growing regional alliances. Analysts warn the situation could morph into a full-scale regional war threatening maritime routes, economies, and geopolitical alignments.

Looking Ahead
From June 13 to date, this confrontation has morphed from covert skirmishes to overt warfare between two major Middle Eastern powers. With mounting casualties on both sides, nuclear facilities under attack, regional actors aligning, and global diplomacy sputtering, the stage is set for a conflict that may linger for months or longer.
