Is Tesla Finally Coming to India? Elon Musk’s Big Move After Meeting PM Modi!

Posted by

  • Tesla has started hiring for multiple roles in India, showing strong interest in the country’s electric vehicle (EV) market.
  • The hiring spree follows a meeting between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the U.S.
  • The Indian government has introduced policies to attract EV makers, reducing import duties and promoting local manufacturing.

Will Tesla Cars Soon Be Seen on Indian Roads?

Tesla, the world’s leading electric car company, has taken a big step towards entering the Indian market. Recently, the company posted job openings for 13 different positions in Mumbai. These roles include sales, customer engagement, and service operations. This move signals that Tesla is preparing to set up operations in India, possibly selling its cars here in the near future.

Elon Musk had earlier planned to visit India in April 2024 to discuss investment opportunities, including the possibility of setting up a Tesla factory. However, due to business challenges, such as job cuts and vehicle recalls in the U.S., he postponed his trip. Despite this, Tesla has remained in talks with Indian officials, showing that the company is still keen on entering the market.

Why Has Tesla Delayed Its India Entry for So Long?

Tesla has been interested in India for years but has faced major hurdles. One of the biggest roadblocks was India’s high import taxes on foreign-made cars. Earlier, electric cars priced above $40,000 faced a massive 110% tax, making Tesla vehicles too expensive for most Indian buyers. However, the government has now reduced this tax to 70%, making it easier for companies like Tesla to bring in their cars.

Moreover, the Indian government has introduced a policy offering lower import taxes for EV companies that invest at least ₹41.5 billion ($500 million) in local production. This is a strong incentive for Tesla and other global automakers to set up factories in India rather than just importing vehicles.

What’s Next for Tesla in India?

Tesla’s hiring push is a clear sign that it is gearing up for a bigger presence in India. The company might start by selling its EVs through imports and later shift to local manufacturing. If things go well, Tesla could even set up a Gigafactory in India—a massive plant for building electric cars and batteries.

India is one of the world’s largest carbon emitters, and the government is pushing for more electric vehicles to reduce pollution. With a growing demand for EVs and improving policies, Tesla’s entry into India could be a game-changer for the automobile industry.

So, will we soon see Tesla’s sleek electric cars zooming on Indian roads? It seems like the wait might finally be over!
