A Maritime Crisis Unfolds
On May 29, 2025, the Kerala government officially declared the sinking of the Liberian-flagged cargo ship MSC ELSA-3 off the coast of Kochi a “State-specific disaster.” The vessel, en route from Vizhinjam Port, capsized on May 24, approximately 14.6 nautical miles from the shoreline. The incident has raised significant environmental, social, and economic concerns, prompting immediate government intervention.

The ship was carrying 643 containers, including 13 identified as containing hazardous chemicals such as calcium carbide and other volatile substances.
