Lahore, Pakistan’s second-largest city, has declared an emergency ‘Green Lockdown’.

Here’s a breakdown of the ongoing situation and the measures taken to address this severe smog crisis:

1. Unprecedented Air Quality Index (AQI) Levels

Lahore’s AQI has spiked dramatically, reaching an alarming level of 1,067 over the weekend. The hazardous air conditions prompted immediate action, with health alerts issued across the city as residents grapple with the thick layer of smog enveloping their surroundings. For the second time, Lahore has topped the global list of cities with the worst air quality.

2. School Closures and Work-from-Home Mandate

To combat the pollution, Lahore authorities have closed all schools from November 4 for at least a week. In addition, a work-from-home policy has been implemented, with 50% of the city’s workforce required to operate remotely to reduce vehicular and industrial emissions.

3. Health Precautions and Mask Mandate for Children

Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb emphasized the smog’s impact on health, particularly for children, and recommended mandatory mask-wearing in schools once they reopen. She expressed concern over the heightened risk of respiratory issues among young children due to prolonged exposure to the polluted air.

4. Possible Cross-Border Pollution Impact

Authorities are suggesting that wind patterns may have carried pollutants from neighboring India, worsening Lahore’s air quality. Minister Aurangzeb has called for potential cross-border discussions to address this shared environmental concern, as strong winds are believed to be pushing pollutants across the border into Pakistan.

5. Local and Regional Causes of Pollution

The smog in Lahore is a result of both local and regional factors. High diesel emissions, agricultural burning, and seasonal temperature drops create an environment where smog can accumulate and persist. Additionally, the influx of polluted air from across the border has exacerbated the situation, with AQI levels in some border areas reportedly soaring between 1,500 and 1,800.

Lahore’s ‘Green Lockdown’ is a significant step to mitigate the effects of the smog crisis, as residents hope these efforts will bring the AQI down and make the city air breathable once again.
