Devotees Flock at Dawn
Thousands gathered in the early morning hours at Puri’s famed Jagannath Temple to witness the Nabajouban Darshan, a traditional moment marking the youthful reappearance of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra following their fortnight-long seclusion. The temple’s Lion Gate (“Singha Dwar”) saw devotees lining up from before sunrise, eager for a glimpse of the deities perched on the sacred “Ratna Bedi” platform inside the sanctum sanctorum.
Significance of Nabajouban
The Nabajouban Darshan is more than a visual spectacle; it embodies spiritual rebirth. Known as the “Netra Utsav” or Eye Festival, it celebrates the restoration of the deities’ gaze and vitality. Following the grand Snana Purnima bath on June 11, the idols enter the Anasara Ghar (“sick room”) for a purported recovery period during which they are kept from public view, attended by temple physicians and priests. Their emergence on the 15th day represents their symbolic healing.
Rituals Behind Closed Doors
During the Anasara period, the wooden idols are treated with traditional herbal medicines and oils, such as Phuluri Tela, and undergo elaborate cleaning and maintenance rites. Priests repaint their eyes, eyebrows, and other features during a ritual called Netrotchhaba. Pattachitra-style depictions stand in for public veneration while the idols remain in seclusion.
Ceremonial Schedule & Access
The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) opened its doors for Nabajouban Darshan from 8 am to 10:30 am. A tiered privilege structure provided paid (paramanik) darshan from 8 to 9 am and general access until 10:30 am. Around 7,000 ticketed devotees participated in the paid window, while countless others attended the free darshan that followed.

For many, the experience was deeply emotional. Believers view Nabajouban Darshan as a sacred blessing, signalling divine rejuvenation and hope. The sudden reappearance after the Anasara period amplifies the sense of spiritual renewal, making it one of the most poignant moments leading into Rath Yatra.

The reappearance comes just before the Rath Yatra, one of the world’s largest chariot festivals. Preparations are already in full swing: chariots, Taladhwaja, Dwarpadalan, and Nandighosha, have been brought to the temple gate, having been pulled from the Rathakhala yard. Security is tight, with surveillance systems, crowd control plans, and medical teams in place.

Authorities have mobilised thousands of personnel, local police, central forces, even NSG commandos in previous events, to ensure a secure festival atmosphere. Additional measures include AI-powered CCTV coverage, crowd control barriers, drone surveillance, and rehearsals to manage the massive turnout expected on Rath Yatra day.
Cultural Flourish & Festival Buzz
Beyond religious rituals, the temple and its surroundings have been adorned for the occasion: hundreds of kilograms of fresh flowers decorate the gates, ornate Odia floor art spans the Grand Road, and rehearsals for chariot pulling and festival fanfare are underway. The spiritual event is tightly woven into Odisha’s cultural and artistic traditions, reflecting the fusion of devotion and local identity.
On the Cusp of ‘Utsav’
With Nabajouban marking their divine return, the saga now transitions into the grandeur of Rath Yatra. On June 27, the deities will be drawn through Puri’s Grand Road toward Gundicha Temple, a ritual offering immense religious merit to devotees. This nine-day festival will engage masses in its journey and stays, drawing pilgrims and onlookers from across India and abroad.
