The National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), based in Hyderabad, has updated its dietary guidelines for Indians after 13 years, incorporating the latest scientific research, changes in lifestyle, prevalent diseases, and evolving food habits. Released by ICMR director-general Dr. Rajiv Bahl, these guidelines aim to encourage healthier eating practices across the nation.
Highlights of the Updated Guidelines:
- Sugar Intake: Limit daily sugar consumption to 20-25 grams, focusing on sugars derived from natural carbohydrates.
- Cooking Practices: Encourages the use of air-frying and granite-coated cookware to reduce oil usage.
- Protein Supplements: Advises against the routine use of protein powders, citing potential health risks and minimal benefits.
- Healthy Fats: Recommends obtaining essential fatty acids through nuts, oilseeds, and seafood instead of excessive oil use.
Why the Emphasis on Less Oil and Sugar? Excessive consumption of sugar and oil has been linked to various health issues such as obesity, diabetes, and heart diseases. By reducing these components in the diet, the guidelines aim to combat these prevalent health problems.
Concerns Over Protein Supplements: The NIN has expressed concerns about protein supplements, noting that they often contain added sugars and artificial additives. High protein intake is associated with certain health risks, including an increased likelihood of non-communicable diseases. The guidelines suggest that dietary protein should be sufficient for most individuals, especially if sourced from whole foods.
Understanding Packaged Food Labels: For the first time, the NIN has also provided guidelines on how to interpret nutritional information and food labels on packaged products. This move is intended to help consumers make informed choices about the foods they purchase and consume.
