‘Not a Trash Bin!’ Allahabad HC Bar Association Opposes Justice Yashwant Verma’s Transfer

Posted by

  • The Allahabad High Court Bar Association strongly objected to the transfer of Justice Yashwant Verma from Delhi HC to Allahabad HC.
  • Their objection follows the discovery of a large sum of cash (Rs 15 crore) at Justice Verma’s official residence.
  • The Bar Association questioned why Allahabad HC was being treated as a “trash bin” for controversial transfers.

Is Allahabad High Court Being Treated Unfairly?

The Bar Association of the Allahabad High Court has taken a firm stand against the Supreme Court Collegium’s decision to transfer Justice Yashwant Verma. In a letter to Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, they raised serious concerns, emphasizing that their court should not be treated as a dumping ground for controversial judges. The letter pointed out that despite a severe shortage of judges, no new appointments had been made for years. The transfer, coming after a major corruption controversy, only adds to their frustration.

The association further expressed disappointment over the lack of consultation with the Bar regarding judicial appointments. They stressed that overlooking proper eligibility criteria has led to corruption and a loss of public faith in the judiciary. The letter questioned the rationale behind transferring a judge under scrutiny to an already burdened court, suggesting that the move undermines the institution’s credibility.

What Happens Next?

The Supreme Court Collegium, after an emergency meeting, decided to transfer Justice Verma following the shocking cash recovery. While the official reasons for the move are not fully disclosed, it raises critical questions about judicial integrity and accountability.

The Allahabad HC Bar Association’s bold statement has sparked a debate on whether such transfers are fair or if they merely shift problems from one court to another. With increasing public concern over corruption in the judiciary, all eyes are now on the Supreme Court to see how it addresses these concerns and ensures transparency in the process.
