Opposition Criticizes Centre’s Decision Allowing Government Employees to Join RSS

Posted by

Key Points:

  • The Centre has lifted a 58-year-old ban on government employees participating in RSS activities.
  • Opposition leaders, including those from Congress, AIMIM, and Trinamool Congress, have strongly criticized the move.
  • The RSS welcomed the decision, stating it strengthens the democratic system of India.

Why Is the Lifting of the RSS Ban Controversial?

The Centre’s decision to allow government employees to join the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its activities has sparked intense political debate. The ban, which was imposed in November 1966 during Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s tenure, was lifted on July 9, 2024, as per an official order. This move has been met with strong opposition, primarily led by the Congress party.

Opposition’s Criticism

BJP’s Amit Malviya announced the decision by sharing a copy of the government order on social media, calling the original 1966 ban unconstitutional. In response, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized the government, pointing out that the ban had been in place even during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s tenure as Prime Minister. Ramesh highlighted the historical context of the ban, which was initially imposed by Sardar Patel after Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination and later re-imposed by Indira Gandhi.

Ramesh took a jab at the RSS’s old uniform of khaki shorts, stating, “I believe bureaucracy can now even come in knickers,” alluding to the RSS’s symbolic attire. He emphasized that the decision undermines the separation between government service and partisan activities.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi also condemned the decision, stating that the RSS promotes Hindu nationalism and does not believe in pluralism, which contradicts the secular principles expected of government employees. He questioned whether NDA allies support this move.

Kerala Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala termed the decision “not at all acceptable,” urging like-minded individuals to oppose it. Similarly, Trinamool Congress’s Derek O’Brien rhetorically questioned if anyone was surprised by the government’s decision, hinting at the expected controversy.

RSS’s Response

In contrast, the RSS welcomed the Centre’s decision. RSS spokesperson Sunil Ambekar issued a statement asserting that the move would strengthen India’s democratic system. He highlighted the RSS’s contributions to national security, unity, integrity, and its role during natural disasters, noting that various leaders have praised the organization for its efforts.

Conclusion

The lifting of the ban on government employees participating in RSS activities has reignited the debate over the separation of state and partisan influences in India. While the opposition criticizes the move as undermining secularism and impartiality in public service, the RSS and its supporters view it as a reinforcement of democratic principles. This contentious decision is set to further polarize opinions as it unfolds in the political arena.
