BJP distanced itself from actress and party MP Kangana Ranaut after she called for the return of the now-withdrawn farm laws, which had sparked massive protests in 2020. BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia clarified on Tuesday that her comments were personal and not reflective of the party’s stance. He emphasized that Ranaut was not authorized to make such statements on behalf of the BJP.
The introduction of the farm laws in September 2020 had led to a year-long farmers’ protest near Delhi, particularly from farmers in Punjab and Haryana. The laws were eventually repealed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2021, following public apology for the failure to convince farmers of their benefits.
With Haryana heading into elections, the BJP, already dealing with anti-incumbency, sought to avoid controversy over the issue. Kangana’s remarks, which suggested that farmers should demand the return of the farm laws, drew criticism from the opposition Congress. However, the actress later clarified on social media that her views were personal and did not reflect the party’s official position.
