Historic First Visit and Prestigious Recognition
Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked his inaugural visit to Namibia, becoming only the third Indian PM to do so. He was warmly greeted in Windhoek and, at a special ceremony, was awarded the “Order of the Most Ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis,” Namibia’s highest civilian honour. The accolade was presented by President Dr Netumbo Nandi‑Ndaitwah, symbolizing Namibia’s admiration for Modi’s role in advancing bilateral ties.
A Symbol of Enduring Friendship
The award draws inspiration from the Welwitschia plant, an ancient Namibian desert species known for its resilience. Modi likened it to a guardian of time, representative of Namibia’s culture and struggle. He dedicated the honour to the people of both nations, declaring it a symbol of their “unbreakable friendship” not born of politics, but forged through shared struggle and cooperation.
Strengthening Strategic Ties
During high-level discussions at State House, Modi and President Ndaitwah committed to deepening collaboration across sectors: digital technology, defence, security, agriculture, healthcare, education, energy, critical minerals, and healthcare. They also witnessed the signing of four memoranda of understanding covering health, entrepreneurship, disaster-resilient infrastructure, and biofuels. Namibia agreed to adopt UPI, India’s digital payment system, becoming the first country to do so.
Cultural Diplomacy and Parliamentary Engagement
Modi’s visit showcased strong cultural and diplomatic gestures. He laid a wreath at Heroes’ Acre to honour Namibian freedom fighters and addressed Parliament, praising shared democratic values. He further acknowledged India’s support for Namibia’s liberation and credited India with early advocacy at the United Nations. He also applauded Namibia for electing its first woman president.
Expanding People-to-People and Economic Cooperation
Modi highlighted the growing bilateral trade, which surpassed US $800 million in 2023–24, and India’s investment of around US $800 million, primarily in mining. He praised Namibia’s support for Project Cheetah, an Indian wildlife initiative, and announced the establishment of an entrepreneurship development centre as well as medical cooperation under India’s Aarogya Maitri program, including plans to supply a Bhabhatron radiotherapy machine for cancer treatment.
A Milestone Tour of Global Diplomacy
The Namibian visit was the concluding stop of Modi’s five-nation diplomatic tour, which included Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and culminating in the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The Namibian honour marks Modi’s 27th foreign award since taking office in 2014, his fourth on this particular tour.
Reflecting on Shared History and Future Vision
Modi used his parliamentary address to draw parallels between India’s and Namibia’s democratic journeys. He recalled India’s early diplomatic support during Namibia’s independence struggle and emphasized the power of constitutional governance in elevating leaders from humble backgrounds to national prominence. Modi invoked the symbolism of Namibia’s national bird, the African Fish Eagle, as a model for collective progress, urging collaboration in line with Africa’s Agenda 2063.
Looking Ahead: A Blueprint for Partnership
The visit laid the foundation for deeper bilateral engagement. Namibia’s UPI integration holds promise for enhanced trade and financial inclusion. Entrepreneurship initiatives and healthcare collaborations aim to bolster economic and social development. Given shared democratic values, growing investment ties, and cultural exchanges such as the cheetah relocation project, India–Namibia relations appear poised for sustained growth.
