A Vision for Northeast India
On May 23, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Rising North East Investors Summit 2025 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. This summit marks a pivotal moment in India’s development strategy, focusing on transforming the north-eastern states into a vibrant economic hub. Modi emphasized the region’s untapped potential, highlighting its strategic location, rich natural resources, and cultural heritage as key drivers for future growth. He introduced the acronym EAST: Empower, Act, Strengthen, and Transform, to encapsulate the government’s approach to the region’s development.
Strategic Investments and Corporate Interest
The summit attracted significant attention from major Indian conglomerates, signalling a shift towards increased investment in the Northeast. Industry giants such as Adani Group, Reliance Industries, and Vedanta announced plans to invest between ₹30,000 to ₹50,000 crore each in the region. These investments are expected to bolster infrastructure, create employment opportunities, and enhance regional connectivity, aligning with the government’s vision of inclusive growth.
Infrastructure Development and Connectivity
A cornerstone of the government’s strategy is the enhancement of infrastructure to facilitate economic activities. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the state’s progress, noting that Assam’s economy has doubled in six years, growing from ₹2.75 lakh crore in 2018 to approximately ₹6 lakh crore today. He attributed this growth to improved connectivity, including the construction of four new bridges over the Brahmaputra River since 2014 and the modernization of over 60 railway stations. Additionally, air connectivity has expanded, with flight routes increasing from seven in 2014 to nearly 30 today, boosting tourism and business.
Digital Transformation and Technological Advancements
The region is also embracing digital transformation to drive innovation and governance. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced the allocation of land in Agartala for the establishment of a state-of-the-art data centre to serve as a digital hub for eastern and north-eastern India. This initiative aims to integrate AI and 5G technologies, supporting efficient governance and technological advancements in the region.
Assam’s Role as a Gateway to Southeast Asia
Prime Minister Modi underscored Assam’s strategic position as a gateway between India and Southeast Asia. He highlighted the state’s role in India’s manufacturing sector, particularly in electronics, semiconductors, and renewable energy. The inauguration of the Tata Semiconductor Assembly & Test Facility in Jagiroad exemplifies Assam’s growing prominence in high-tech industries. Modi expressed confidence that Assam’s economy would reach $150 billion by 2030, driven by its natural resources and strategic location.
Policy Initiatives and Industrial Growth
The government has introduced several policy initiatives to foster industrial growth in the region. The North East Transformative Industrialization Scheme, ‘Unnati,’ aims to accelerate industry, investment, and tourism across the Northeast. Modi encouraged industry leaders to capitalize on Assam’s abundant natural resources and strategic location, citing the global success of Assam tea as an example of the state’s potential.
Environmental Sustainability and Renewable Energy
In line with India’s commitment to sustainability, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of renewable energy in the region’s development. He noted that Assam, with its natural resources, is well-positioned to lead in sectors like solar, wind, and green hydrogen production. Modi urged industry stakeholders to invest in renewable energy projects, aligning with the government’s goal of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
Conclusion: A New Dawn for Northeast India
The Rising North East Investors Summit 2025 signifies a new chapter in the development of India’s north-eastern states. With strategic investments, enhanced infrastructure, and a focus on digital transformation, the region is poised to become a key player in India’s economic landscape. Prime Minister Modi’s vision of confidence, connectivity, and commerce underscores the government’s commitment to empowering the Northeast, ensuring that it contributes significantly to the nation’s growth and prosperity.
